Community Means All of Us

Give Today

Different Needs Require Different Solutions

In addition to our Vocational Program, we offer other supportive programs, services, and resources to a community desperately in need of them.

Technology Center

Think of all the ways we use technology to search for and apply for jobs, complete research and schoolwork, and connect with family and friends. Yet many people in our community do not have reliable access to technology. This lack of access greatly disadvantages those trying to succeed in their work and school lives.

Lab Hours
Hours vary based on the availability of lab monitors. Please click here to see our current operating hours.

If you are interested in volunteering as a monitor in the computer lab,

At Salt & Light we recognize we are just one organization working to make our community a better place.
Our capacity is limited, but by partnering with other like-minded organizations we expand our reach and impact.
Together, we can offer a wide array of programs and services that benefit everyone.

Secondary Transitional Experience Program (STEP)

We host students from area high schools through this important program administered for Champaign County schools through the Rural Champaign County Special Education Cooperative (RCCSEC).

STEP is a state-wide program for students with disabilities, based on the Cooperative Work Training (CWT) program model. It allows for an individualized approach, with higher levels of training/support provided to students, as needed, with an option to engage in paid employment or volunteer work, based on student need. In STEP, employers, teachers, parents, and vocational coordinators work as a team to help the students become productive members of society. Students receive training in employability skill, promoting job retention and satisfaction.

We host students from Urbana, Champaign Central, Mahomet, Unity, St. Joe, and Heritage High Schools.

Pavilion Foundation School

We host students from the Pavilion Foundation School for a similar developmental purpose as those in STEP. The school is located on the hospital campus and provides educational services to young patients at The Pavilion. Serving children with behavioral and learning disorders, they aim to work with each student, their family, and their home school district to create successful reintegration with their former school.

Developmental Services Center (DSC)

We host groups from DSC weekly to foster their sense of community and develop capacities like those from STEP and the Pavilion School. We also provide space for DSC to facilitate several educational opportunities, including life skills classes, microwave cooking classes, speech therapy groups, and play groups.

REcompute

We partner with REcompute to provide refurbished laptops along with basic computer instruction for folks going to school, looking for jobs, or just trying to stay connected. Over the last year we have worked together to provide 54 laptops and 47 hours of instruction.

Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA)

We partner with the UIUC Gies School of Business to offer free tax assistance to:

Low-to-moderate-income (gross income less than
$64,000 for 2023)
Elderly (over age 60)
Limited English-speaking taxpayers
People with disabilities

This vital resource aligns with our mission and vision by protecting vulnerable people in our community from predatory for-profit tax-prep organizations and creating opportunities for financial education. To learn more about this seasonal program, sign up for our newsletter.

In addition to our core program, we offer access to a computer lab at our Urbana location and an array of other seasonal and ongoing programs and services through various partnerships with other organizations in the community. Carle Mobile Health Clinic

The Carle Mobile Health Clinic provides affordable, non-urgent medical services to those who might have difficulty getting care. We host the 40-foot, wheelchair-friendly mobile medical clinic twice each month on the 2nd and 4th Wednesdays of the month. It offers basic care to infants, children, and adults to ensure families stay healthy. Practitioners have experience in pediatrics, family medicine, women’s health, and pregnancy.

Carle’s drug interventionist and social worker are also available to meet with clients during the visits as well.

Narcotics Anonymous Community Meeting

We currently host three different weekly NA meetings open to anyone in the community looking for support in actively recovering from narcotics addiction. No registration is necessary. See our events calendar and check out the local NA’s website for more information. Here is the link: https://www.ppana.org/meetings

Disaster Assistance

Individuals and families who have experienced a natural disaster like a fire or flood can request store credit for items they may need to replace. The amount provided is based on family size and specific needs. Individuals must provide documentation from the Red Cross to support their request. Requests without documentation are handled on a case-by-case basis.
